What's it like working as a server at a nursing home?

  • The nursing home I work at the server will go around to each room at the beginning of the shift and give each resident a jug of water. Then they check the dining room/resident kitchen and make sure there's enough coffee, milk, sugar, etc. Then they help serve the meals to the residents. Depending on the state you live in and the facility you may be required to thicken drinks. The facility I work at the aides thicken the drinks but other facilities in my state allow the servers to do so. You have to have thick skin because some of the residents are really picky about the meals and as being the server you're the one who's going to get the blunt of it. And you have to be attentive because you dont want to give the wrong meal to the wrong person an example would be giving a regular meal to someone on a pureed diet. After the meals the servers will usually clear the tables and then that's the end of the shift. Usually we have one server for breakfast and lunch and another server for dinner.

  • server? as in kitchen staff or nursing assistant?
